From Humble Beginnings: How a Mango Seller’s Son Conquered the Ice Cream Industry, Building a Rs 300 Crore Empire
From Humble Beginnings to a Rs 300 Crore Empire: The Inspiring Story of Raghunandan Kamath
Raghunandan Kamath, the son of a humble mango seller in Karnataka, achieved the impossible by building a thriving ice cream business from scratch without relying on advertisements or a higher education degree. His journey, marked by perseverance and hard work, led to the establishment of Naturals Ice Cream, now valued at over Rs 300 crore.
Born and raised in a small village in Karnataka’s Mangaluru, Kamath grew up helping his father sell mangoes. Quitting school at 14, he began working at his older brother’s small eatery. However, he had a different passion – making ice cream from natural ingredients using real fruit pulp. This idea sparked during his fruit-selling days, where he learned the art of plucking ripe fruit and preserving it.
In 1984, Kamath moved to Mumbai in search of better opportunities. It was here that he started his ice cream journey, opening a small parlour in Vile Parle with six workers, including himself. The outlet served 12 flavours of ice cream, all made from natural fruit pulp, and quickly gained popularity among locals and tourists. Despite not relying on advertisements, Kamath’s ice cream made headlines when West Indian cricketing legend Sir Vivian Richards praised his product in 1986.
Kamath’s commitment to quality and unique flavors led to rapid growth. By 1994, he had opened five more outlets in Mumbai, catering to an increasing demand for his mouthwatering ice cream. Throughout his journey, he relied on the natural taste of his products to attract customers, never investing in advertisements or promotions.
Today, Naturals Ice Cream has become one of the largest ice cream makers in India, with over 165 outlets across 15 cities, offering 125+ flavors. This incredible achievement is a testament to Kamath’s determination and vision. Although he passed away in May last year following a brief illness, his legacy continues to inspire entrepreneurs and ice cream lovers alike.
Raghunandan Kamath’s remarkable story serves as a reminder that success is within reach, regardless of one’s background or educational qualifications. His dedication to quality and innovation has made Naturals Ice Cream a household name, and his legacy will continue to indulge the taste buds of millions for years to come.
