Tensions Rise in Manipur as Kuki-Zo Community Protests Meitei Pilgrimage to Sacred Site
A standoff has erupted between the Kuki-Zo community and the Meitei community in Manipur’s Churachandpur district over a sacred site in the Thangjing hill range. The tension began on Sunday when the indigenous tribe launched a protest against the Meitei community’s annual pilgrimage to the top of the hill, citing concerns over the latter’s entry into their protected buffer zone. The protests were led by the Indigenous Tribals’ Leaders Forum (ITLF), the Kuki Students Organisation (KSO), and other civil society organizations.
According to reports, the Kuki community has long been opposed to the Meitei pilgrimage, which they see as a potential threat to their territory and culture. In a joint statement, the Kuki tribal organizations emphasized that "unless a political settlement is reached by the government of India for the Kuki-Zo-Hmar community under the Constitution of India, no such friendly approach to the jurisdiction of Kuki-Zo-Hmar land would be allowed for the Meitei community." The statement urged the government to safeguard the interests of both communities and take measures to prevent further escalation.
The Meitei community, on the other hand, views the pilgrimage to the Thangjing hill as an essential part of their cultural and religious heritage. The mountain range is an integral part of the western border of the Imphal Valley, and the annual pilgrimage has been a long-standing tradition for the Meitei people. However, the Kuki community has repeatedly warned that they will not allow the pilgrimage to proceed without a political solution, citing concerns over their territorial rights and cultural sensitivity.
The protests, which took place at Pholjang village, near the foothill, brought together hundreds of Kuki and women, children, and civil society organizations. The Kuki community has made it clear that any attempt to cross the buffer zone would be met with opposition. The situation is currently tense, with both sides holding firm to their positions, vowing not to budge unless their demands are met.
The Kuki-Zo community has long been seeking greater recognition and protection for their territorial rights, cultural heritage, and traditional practices. The current standoff highlights the complex and often contentious relationship between the Kuki-Zo and Meitei communities in Manipur. The issue has raised questions about the need for a permanent political solution to address the region’s complex social and cultural dynamics.
