Conquer Uncharted Terrain: Unleash Your Limits at Meghalaya’s Tura Rock Climbing and Mountaineering Adventure Camp
The District Sports Office in Tura, Meghalaya, has taken a bold step to promote adventure sports in the region by organizing a two-day awareness program on rock climbing and mountaineering. The camp, held at P.A. Sangma Stadium, Dakopgre, saw an enthusiastic turnout of over 80 students from local schools, making it a truly unique initiative.
The Meghalaya Sports Climbing and Mountaineering Association (MSMA) partnered with the district administration to bring in a team of experts from Shillong, who conducted hands-on training sessions, interactive discussions, and practical demonstrations. The students were introduced to the fundamentals of climbing, rappelling, and the equipment used in these adventure sports. Despite having no prior training, the students showed remarkable aptitude, impressing the trainers with their agility and determination.
The camp’s success was evident in the rapid progress the students made, with some even showcasing natural talent in climbing activities on the very first day. Teachers accompanying the students expressed immense pride and delight at witnessing their students excel in such a challenging sport. The District Sports Officer, Saljagring M. Marak, shared his satisfaction with the outcome, stating that the initiative has shown immense potential in grooming international-level athletes from the region.
The promising outcome of the camp has led to plans to establish a dedicated rock climbing and mountaineering club in the Garo Hills. The proposed club will be mentored by Mr. Wallambok Lyngdoh, General Secretary of the MSMA and a seasoned mountaineering trainer, who has extensive experience in training Indian Army personnel in high-altitude regions such as the Siachen Glacier.
The success of the camp is a testament to the growing interest in adventure sports in the region, and the district administration’s commitment to fostering this interest. As the region looks to the future, it is clear that the seeds of enthusiasm and dedication sown during this camp will lead to a brighter future for rock climbing and mountaineering in the Garo Hills.
