Authorities arrested a Pennsylvania man this week following allegations that he made online threats to assassinate President Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and other government officials. The threats, posted on YouTube under the alias “Mr Satan,” prompted intervention from Google, the owner of YouTube, which alerted federal law enforcement. The suspect has been identified as Shawn Monper, a 32-year-old resident of Butler, Pennsylvania, according to a criminal complaint filed in federal court.

In this comment, Mr. Monper reportedly stated his intent to “assassinate him myself.” Furthermore, earlier comments from February 17 indicate Mr. Monper advocated for violence against Mr. Trump, Elon Musk, and several agency heads appointed by Trump, writing, “Nah, we just need to start killing people, Trump, Elon, all the heads of agencies Trump appointed, and anyone who stands in the way.”
Additional evidence reveals Mr. Monper bragged on February 26 about purchasing firearms and stockpiling ammunition since Mr. Trump began his second term, alongside a declaration of intent to carry out a mass shooting. These statements underscore the severe nature of the threats and have heightened public concern, especially in the light of Mr. Trump’s previous brush with danger. Back in July 2024, Butler, Pennsylvania, was the site of a campaign rally where Mr. Trump survived an assassination attempt. The latest criminal complaint against Mr. Monper did not reference this past incident, but it remains a pertinent backdrop to the current case.
Despite timely charges and a public outcry for more information, Mr. Monper’s legal representative declined to comment. Federal prosecutors have highlighted that Mr. Monper’s threatening behavior extended beyond prominent figures like Mr. Trump and Mr. Musk, targeting agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as well. The Trump administration has faced considerable scrutiny over its robust immigration policies, with specific criticism aimed at ICE and Homeland Security personnel for their conduct in arresting students and legal immigrants.
Coinciding with these tensions, a recent ruling in Louisiana saw an immigration judge support the deportation of Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia University alumnus and legal resident, over his involvement in pro-Palestinian protests. Attorney General Pam Bondi expressed gratitude to the F.B.I. and Butler Township police for their swift response in apprehending Mr. Monper. “Rest assured that whenever and wherever threats of assassination or mass violence occur, this Department of Justice will find, arrest, and prosecute the suspect to the fullest extent of the law and seek the maximum appropriate punishment,” Bondi vowed in a statement released on Friday.
