Meghalaya High Court Delays Hearing in Bilsio Meghalaya Case until 2025
The Meghalaya High Court has adjourned the hearing in the Bilsio Meghalaya case until February 25, 2025, citing a substantial cause. The case, which involves 492 accused and 317 witnesses, was initially set to begin on January 5, 2023.
The case centers around the alleged irregularities in the appointment of assistant teachers in Lower Primary schools in Meghalaya between 2008-2009. The controversy allegedly involved Cabinet Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh, who was named as a accused in the case. The Law Minister had earlier filed a petition under Section 482 of the Criminal Procedure Code to quash the charges against the accused.
Law Minister Rameshwar Bosia had argued that the case was stalled for over a decade and that a significant amount of evidence had been collected, rendering further investigation unnecessary. He had also requested that the court dismiss the case, citing the passage of time and the lack of prejudice to the accused.
"We have been seeking justice for a long time, and it’s disheartening to see that the case has been adjourned yet again," said a lawyer representing the accused. "The continued delay is causing undue hardship to the affected individuals and families."
The court has directed the Special Judge, who was appointed to hear the case, to proceed with the trial in accordance with the law. The Chief Justice, IP Mukerji, has also been informed of the adjournment.
The Bilsio Meghalaya case has been a subject of controversy in the state, with allegations of corruption and abuse of power being leveled against several high-ranking officials. The case has seen several adjournments and setbacks over the years, much to the frustration of the affected parties.
In the meantime, the accused in the case will have to wait for another two years before the hearing resumes.
