A heart-wrenching incident has shaken a small village in Assam, leaving the community reeling in shock. Mithali Deka, a 17-year-old student of Chaygaon Higher Secondary School, allegedly took her own life after failing to find her roll number in the recently announced HSLC examination results. The devastating incident highlights the intense pressure and stress that students face during exam periods and the need for timely and accurate dissemination of results.
According to reports, Mithali’s family and neighbors had been awaiting the results eagerly as the student had sent her mother, Junmani Deka, to a neighbor’s house to reconfirm the results. “I was anxious, and my daughter was more so,” Junmani said, breaking down in tears, recalling the events. During the brief time she was left alone, Mithali reportedly hanged herself, leaving behind a shattered family and a community in grief. Neighbors, who were alerted immediately after Junmani returned home, arrived just too late to save her daughter’s life.
Mithali’s tragic death has sent shockwaves through the village in Assam’s Kamrup district, with the small community coming together to offer condolences to the family. Her father, Apurba Deka, a painter and daily wage laborer, said, “We didn’t think our only child’s life would be affected by the results. We’re reeling in shock and grief.”
A Chaygaon Police Station officer, Kamakhya Mishra, confirmed that an unnatural death case (No. 15/2025) has been registered, following reports of the incident. An inquest was carried out by the Chaygaon Circle Officer and a Magistrate. Further examination is underway, with the body being sent to Guwahati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) for postmortem.
Eyewitnesses describe the lack of clear communication about the results as a contributing factor in the tragic incident, emphasizing the need for accurate dissemination of information. As the Assam Board of Secondary Education announces results, it becomes imperative to address the concerns of anxious students and their families. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of swift and transparent communication in sensitive situations.
