Microsoft’s Recall feature, a tool that captures snapshots of a user’s screen to help them find previously viewed content, is making a comeback in the latest Windows 11 update for Insiders in the Release Preview Channel. The feature, which uses AI to describe and retrieve content, has been revamped with stronger privacy controls and an opt-in rollout. After facing criticism and delays, Microsoft is reintroducing Recall as a secure and trusted experience.
Recall was initially set to debut with Copilot Plus PCs in June 2024 but was pushed back multiple times due to security concerns. The feature was later tested in the Dev Channel for select Qualcomm-powered Copilot Plus PCs in November 2024. In its current form, Recall functions as a searchable memory for the user’s computer, storing locally encrypted snapshots of the screen that can only be accessed after verifying the user’s identity through Windows Hello.
The feature allows users to ask Recall to “find that vegan pasta recipe I saw last week,” and it will surface text and image matches from the activity timeline. Users can interact with past content by copying text, editing images, or jumping back into a specific app, all while maintaining control over their data. Microsoft stresses that Recall is disabled by default, and users must choose to turn it on. Additionally, users can pause or delete snapshots at any time, and no data is shared with Microsoft, third parties, or other users.
Microsoft has emphasized the importance of user consent and privacy, stating that Recall will remain off in managed enterprise and education settings unless IT administrators enable it. As for availability, Recall (preview) will become broadly available in early 2025 in most markets, with a separate rollout to the European Economic Area planned for later this year. The tool is optimized for specific languages, including English, Chinese (Simplified), French, German, Japanese, and Spanish.
