Kerala HC Orders High-Stakes CBI Probe into Chief Principal Secretary’s Dubious Wealth, Nordhmann’s Fate Hangs in Balance
High Court Orders CBI Probe into Kerala’s Chief Principal Secretary’s Wealth
The Kerala High Court has shocked a top official in the state government, ordering a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the assets of K.M. Abraham, the Chief Principal Secretary to Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. Abraham, a former Chief Secretary, has been at the center of a long-running controversy over his wealth, with allegations of asset concealment and misuse of power.
According to a public activist, Joemon Puthenpurackal, Abraham has been hiding assets across Mumbai, Thiruvananthapuram, and Kollam, with monthly loan installments exceeding his known income. Puthenpurackal, who has been investigating Abraham’s wealth for nearly a decade, claims to have acquired documents proving the former Chief Secretary’s hidden assets.
The High Court’s move comes as a major blow to Abraham, who has been facing allegations of corruption and wrongdoing since his retirement in December 2017. A former Vigilance Director, Jacob Thomas, has come forward in support of the probe, stating that Abraham had used his powers to thwart a previous investigation into his conduct during Thomas’s tenure. Thomas pointed out that the Chief Minister has a responsibility to explain why Abraham remains in a key position despite the ongoing allegations.
Abraham’s tenure as a member of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) between 2008 and 2011 was marked by a significant achievement – exposing financial irregularities at Sahara India, resulting in a record-breaking penalty of Rs 15,473 crore. However, this past achievement may now pale in comparison to the current allegations against him.
The High Court’s decision is expected to shed light on the extent of Abraham’s wealth and whether he has misused his powers as Chief Principal Secretary. The CBI probe will also raise questions about the Chief Minister’s role in allowing Abraham to remain in office despite the allegations. As the investigation unfolds, public scrutiny of the government’s conduct will continue to intensify.
The case has caught the attention of activists and government officials, who are now closely watching the development. As the CBI delves into Abraham’s assets and conduct, the state government will face increasing pressure to explain its stance on the matter.
