Mizoram Urged to Safeguard Refugee Rights: 42,000 Await Crucial Policy Guidance
Mizoram Struggles to Accommodate 42,000 Refugees, CYMA Steps Up Advocacy
Aizawl, Mizoram – The Young Mizo Association (CYMA), a prominent civil society group in Mizoram, has sounded the alarm on the urgent need for a structured and comprehensive mechanism to accommodate over 42,000 refugees and internally displaced persons (IDPs) residing in the state. This crisis has been ongoing for some time, with the current numbers hailing from Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Manipur, putting a significant strain on Mizoram’s resources.
According to the Home Department, more than 33,000 refugees are from Myanmar’s Chin state, while around 7,000 are ethnic Kuki-Zo people from Manipur, and over 2,000 are Bawm people from Bangladesh’s Chittagong Hill Tracts (CHT). In a desperate bid to address this growing concern, the CYMA’s Central Coordination Committee recently reviewed the progress of a special committee set up to draft proposals for refugee management.
The consequences of inaction are far-reaching, with the lack of shelter and clear guidelines leading to a host of logistical and humanitarian challenges. To mitigate this, CYMA officials are urging the Mizoram government to designate specific locations for shelter and establish comprehensive guidelines for handling these displaced groups. “We must work harder to ensure that the state government designates proper shelter locations for the refugees and frames relevant guidelines for their governance,” stated Malsawmliana, CYMA general secretary.
Statistics from the Home Department confirm the magnitude of the crisis, underscoring the critical need for a more organized response. As the situation remains precarious, observers are closely watching the next steps taken by the Mizoram government and the CYMA to address this refugee crisis, which is straining the state’s capacity to provide for its displaced population. The CYMA’s push for a solutions-focused approach should galvanize the government into immediate action to prevent further suffering among these vulnerable communities.
