Tesla CEO and White House advisor Elon Musk has reportedly made direct appeals to U.S. President Donald Trump, urging him to reconsider imposing strict tariffs on China. Despite his efforts, Musk’s attempts have been unsuccessful, as conveyed by sources cited in The Washington Post. The introduction of aggressive tariffs has precipitated turmoil in global markets, significantly impacting Tesla’s stock and reducing Musk’s net worth by $135 billion. As of April 8, Musk’s wealth has dropped to $298 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, marking a significant decline below the $300 billion threshold for the first time since November 2024.

In a bid to influence the White House’s trade strategy, Musk has made efforts to bypass trade adviser Peter Navarro to speak directly with President Trump. However, two sources informed the Post that Musk’s initiatives have yet to effect any policy changes. President Trump escalated tensions on April 7 by threatening China with additional tariffs if the nation retaliates against his ongoing trade policy measures. Current tariff rates have been set at 34 percent on Chinese imports, with the President proposing to raise these duties to 50 percent.

While Musk has not publicly denounced the new tariffs introduced by Trump, he engaged in a social media dispute with Navarro on the platform known as X, formerly Twitter. During a different engagement, via a video conference with Italy’s League party leader Matteo Salvini, Musk proposed the idea of establishing a “free-trade zone” between the U.S. and Europe, advocating for “zero tariffs.” Musk expressed his vision, saying, “At the end of the day, I hope it’s agreed that both Europe and the U.S. should move ideally, in my view, to a zero tariff situation, effectively creating a free trade zone.”

Even though Musk hasn’t explicitly opposed Trump’s trade policies, he hinted at his stance by posting a video on X on April 7 featuring economist Milton Friedman. The video illustrates the benefits of a global supply chain using a simple pencil as an example, subtly countering Trump’s “make everything in America” aspirations.

Peter Navarro, speaking to Fox News, accused Musk of prioritizing Tesla’s financial interests over national trade policies. Navarro highlighted Tesla’s global supply chain, which sources materials from countries like China, Mexico, Japan, and Taiwan, stating, “Elon when he’s in his DOGE lane is great, but we understand what’s going on here. Elon sells cars. He’s simply protecting his own interests.”

In response, Musk took to X to critique Navarro, saying, “A PhD in Econ from Harvard is a bad thing, not a good thing. Results in the ego/brains >>1 problem.”
