Politic’s Integrity Put to the Test: APCC Chief Claims Innocence in Corruption Scandal
Assam Congress President Bhupen Borah Denies Money Demand Allegations, Seeks Police Investigation
Assam Congress president Bhupen Borah has rubbished allegations that he demanded money from individuals involved in a coal syndicate, challenging anyone to provide concrete evidence. In a strongly worded statement, Borah vowed to resign from politics if the accusations are proven true. The allegations emerged after purported audio clips surfaced on social media, featuring a voice demanding money, which the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) claimed belonged to Borah.
Borah rejected the claims, accusing BJP supporters of circulating fabricated audio clips as part of a smear campaign. He emphasized that the Congress party adheres to principled politics and does not accept money from anyone. Instead, he stated that party workers fund operational costs. The recent development has led to a heated exchange between the two parties, with the Congress filing a formal complaint with the Guwahati Police Commissioner, requesting a swift investigation into the distribution of the alleged fake audio.
BJP spokesperson Manoj Baruah responded by alleging that Borah was being hypocritical, given the Congress’s track record of corruption. Baruah dismissed the claim that the audio clips were AI-generated or fake, stating that the public knows the truth. The BJP spokesperson claimed that the Congress has a history of corruption and its leaders have no moral right to lecture the BJP on principles and honesty.
Assam Police have confirmed that they are investigating the matter, with a delegation led by Congress general secretary Ramanna Barua filing a complaint at Hatigaon police station. The controversy has sparked a political firestorm in Assam, with both parties trading barbs and accusations. As the investigation continues, it remains to be seen whether the allegations against Borah will be substantiated or remain mere allegations.
