The Israeli military has admitted to inaccuracies in its initial reports regarding the killing of 15 individuals, identified by the United Nations as paramedics and rescue workers, in southern Gaza last month. This clarification followed the release of a video obtained by The New York Times, which contradicted previous military claims. Initially, Israeli forces reported firing at vehicles that “advanced suspiciously” without headlights or emergency signals. However, the video demonstrated that the vehicles, which included clearly marked ambulances and a fire truck, had their emergency lights activated.
The international community has responded with significant scrutiny and condemnation, prompting the Israeli military to address the discrepancies more swiftly than usual. Typically, military investigations into controversial incidents can be protracted, but the video evidence hastened this response.
Originally, the military asserted that nine of the deceased were members of Hamas or Islamic Jihad, though they failed to provide evidence. A military official, speaking anonymously, stated that six out of the 15 were affiliated with Hamas but did not offer proof. Prior to the deadly incident, the official mentioned that Israeli reserve forces had been engaged in confrontations with Hamas fighters, resulting in the killing of two Hamas security personnel.
When an emergency convoy arrived at dawn, Israeli forces reportedly mistook the rescue workers for Hamas operatives and opened fire. Amos Harel, a commentator on military affairs for Haaretz, emphasized the complexity of the situation, suggesting that it would be premature to label the soldiers’ actions as intentional murder. The military has denied allegations of bodies being bound and executed at close range. They explained the burial was intended to protect the bodies from wild animals, and heavy machinery was used to clear the road, which damaged vehicles.
The Palestine Red Crescent Society reported that ambulances had been dispatched early on March 23, following an Israeli shelling incident that injured Palestinian civilians. According to the Red Crescent and the United Nations, efforts to retrieve the bodies were delayed by negotiations with Israeli authorities. They condemned the targeting of medical personnel, which they labeled as a potential war crime, and noted this attack brought their death toll to 27 medics since the conflict began on October 7, 2023, in the wake of a Hamas-led attack on Israel.
The exposure of the video brought wider attention in Israel to the case. Political figures have largely refrained from commenting, pending the military’s investigation completion. Military analyst Amos Harel identified the inquiry as a test for Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, the newly appointed military chief of staff. Broader questions linger regarding accountability; previous findings by Yesh Din, an Israeli human rights group, revealed that very few investigations into alleged war crimes in Gaza ever lead to prosecution. This ongoing issue underscores the complex and contentious nature of the Israeli-Gaza conflict, highlighting the urgent need for clarity, transparency, and adherence to international humanitarian law.
