Thousands of demonstrators across the United States hit the streets on Saturday, opposing President Donald Trump and adviser Elon Musk over sweeping government downsizing, cuts to public services, and contentious social policies. The “Hands Off!” rallies unfolded in over 1,200 locations across all 50 states, attracting civil rights advocates, labor unions, LGBTQ+ groups, veterans, and other organizations urging the administration to pause its aggressive shake-up of the federal government. Major protest sites included the National Mall in Washington, DC, and bustling city centers from New York to Los Angeles, showcasing a widespread call for action.
This wave of protests reflects deep-seated dissatisfaction with what critics perceive as an assault on democratic institutions. As reported by AFP, activist Graylan Hagler addressing protesters in Washington, DC stated, “They’ve woken up a sleeping giant, and they haven’t seen nothing yet.” Central to the discontent is Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, who now leads the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). He faces significant backlash for recommending significant cutbacks across federal agencies. While Musk argues these measures save taxpayers billions, a substantial segment of the American public views them as dismantling critical services.
Among the issues underscored by protesters are the closure of Social Security offices, mass layoffs of federal workers, and anticipated reductions in healthcare and HIV funding. Kelley Robinson, leader of the Human Rights Campaign, voiced concerns in Washington, condemning the rollback of LGBTQ+ protections. She highlighted issues like banning books, slashing HIV prevention funding, and criminalizing professions essential to American society. Similar sentiments resonated nationwide, with New York demonstrators parading through Manhattan bearing signs that read “Hands Off Our Democracy” and “Diversity Equity Inclusion Makes America Strong.” Meanwhile, thousands more convened at Boston Common to protest the administration’s stance on education and Social Security.
Beyond U.S. borders, international protests sprung up in European cities such as London and Berlin, where participants voiced concerns over Trump’s global economic policies. Liz Chamberlin, a dual U.S.-UK citizen in London, remarked, “It’s economic lunacy… He is going to push us into a global recession.”
Despite these demonstrations, the White House appeared unfazed. Officials reiterated Trump’s commitment to safeguarding Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid for eligible Americans. They contended that Democrats aim to expand these benefits to undocumented immigrants, which they argue could lead to financial insolvency of these programs, placing American seniors at risk.
The unrest reflects considerable unease across political lines, with former Reagan Republican Roger Broom, 66, sharing his anxiety in Columbus, Ohio, stating, “He’s tearing this country apart. It’s just an administration of grievances.”
These rallies represent one of the most significant coordinated protest efforts since Trump’s return to office, though not yet matching the scale of the 2017 Women’s March or the 2020 Black Lives Matter protests. However, as many speakers cautioned, Saturday’s demonstrations may merely be the beginning, hinting at continued and potentially intensifying opposition.
