India’s Home Minister Calls for Peaceful Resolve, Surrender and Integration of Maoists
Nation Reaches Out to Maoist Members Amid Growing Peace Momentum in Bastar
In a bid to nudge Maoist groups towards peace, Union Home Minister Amit Shah extended an appeal to those involved in extremist activities to put down arms and join the mainstream. Addressing the Bastar Pandum festival in Chhattisgarh, Shah emphasized the importance of reintegrating into society and contributing to the development projects led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The Home Minister revisited the PM’s vision for a flourishing Bastar, a region where children, schools, and medical facilities are well established, and each individual has access to comprehensive healthcare and seven kg of free rice. This vision, however, can only be realized in an atmosphere of peace. Shah emphasized that this collective resolve must come from the people of Bastar to prize their areas free of Naxalism (Maoism) and make their villages prosperous.
To encourage the transformation, Shah cited CM Vishnu Deo Sai’s pledge of Rs 1 crore to the village that achieves the goal of becoming Maoist-free. The Home Minister also brought up the government’s initiatives and the Prime Minister’s commitment to uplift marginalized groups, such as the elevation of tribal daughter Droupadi Murmu as the President, a testament to the latter’s faith in hands-on participatory governance. Amit Shah emphasized the gap between the lack of action during the Congress period and the phenomenal accomplishments under PM Modi’s leadership, pointing out 4 crore houses built, 12 crore toilets constructed, tap water access for 15 crore households, free rations for 80 crore people, and free medical treatment for 70 crore citizens.
Amit Shah highlighted the growing momentum towards peace in the region, citing the growing number of recent surrenders (over 500 in this year alone) by individuals choosing to abandon the path of violence. He assured a place in mainstream society for those who choose to leave extremism, however, made clear that those persisting in militancy would face stern security actions.
Also highlighting the transformation in the region, specifically discussing how schools that were deserted years ago now echo with children returning to classrooms, and residential industry hums with life as units increase producing and thriving business units. Shifting Shah towards the evolving and increasingly positive landscape transform in Bastar.
