Bangkok, April 4 – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a meeting with Bangladesh’s Chief Advisor, Muhammad Yunus, on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok. The conversation centered around the safety and security of minorities in Bangladesh, with Modi urging the country to ensure the protection of Hindus and others. This marks the first in-person meeting between the two leaders since the ouster of the Awami League government and the formation of the interim government under Yunus’ leadership.
Modi expressed his concerns about the environment in Bangladesh, stressing the importance of constructive discussions to address issues of mutual interest between the two nations. He also reiterated India’s support for a democratic, stable, and peaceful Bangladesh, emphasizing the need for a people-centric approach to their relationship. The Indian Prime Minister highlighted the long-standing cooperation between the two countries, which has delivered tangible benefits to their citizens.
Yunus, according to Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, underlined Bangladesh’s commitment to ensuring the security and safety of its minority population, including Hindus. Modi also brought up the topic of border security, urging the strict enforcement of laws and prevention of illegal border crossings, particularly at night. The two leaders discussed the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and holding regular and inclusive elections in Bangladesh, which Modi believes are crucial for a stable democracy.
Bangladesh took over as the Chair of BIMSTEC earlier in the day, a regional grouping aimed at advancing cooperation on various issues, including healthcare. Modi congratulated the country on assuming this role and expressed his hopes for the forum to further drive regional integration under Bangladesh’s leadership.
In a separate development, Yunus presented Modi with a photograph during their meeting, which depicted Modi presenting a gold medal to Yunus at the 102nd Indian Science Congress in 2015. The meeting was described as “constructive, productive, and fruitful” by Yunus’ Press Secretary, Shafiqul Alam.
The meeting between Modi and Yunus underscores India’s commitment to fostering a positive and constructive relationship with Bangladesh based on pragmatism. As the world’s two largest democracies, their cooperation is crucial for regional stability and prosperity.
