The ongoing crisis in Manipur has taken center stage in the Rajya Sabha, with Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge demanding an inquiry into the situation and urging the Centre to table a White Paper on the issue. However, Home Minister Amit Shah has fired back, accusing the opposition of indulging in "political sallies" that fail to address the root causes of the violence.

Kharge slammed the government for its handling of the crisis, stating that more than 260 people have lost their lives and over 60,000 have been displaced in the past two years. He accused the BJP of "watching in silence" as the situation in Manipur worsened, with the state’s economy crumbling and GST collections plummeting. The Congress chief also criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not visiting Manipur during the crisis, instead attending election rallies and foreign trips. Rahul Gandhi’s trip to Manipur to meet with victims and judges from the Supreme Court were also highlighted as stark contrasts to the PM’s inaction.

Shah hit back, assuring that the imposition of President’s Rule was not a politically motivated move, as was the case with previous Congress-led governments. Instead, he said the decision was taken in response to the resignation of the Chief Minister, which coincided with the Congress’s plans to table a no-confidence motion. The Home Minister stressed that there was no majority for a no-trust vote, and in the absence of a suitable alternative, President’s Rule was the only option.

Shah also clarified that the situation in Manipur has seen an improvement in recent months, with no reported instances of violence since the Chief Minister’s resignation. He drew a distinction between community-based conflicts and those against the state, highlighting that the previous Congress government in the state had faced challenges that the current BJP administration is addressing differently.

The Home Minister’s comments come as tensions between the Centre and the Congress continue to rise over the crisis in Manipur. Critics argue that the government’s response to the situation has been inadequate, with Kharge lambasting the ruling party for prioritizing electoral interests over the well-being of the Manipur people. As the situation in Manipur continues to unfold, the debate over accountability and leadership will likely remain a contentious issue in the days to come.
