Empowering a Drug-Free Tripura: CM Seeks Enhanced Sports Infrastructure
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha recently highlighted the crucial role of sports in combating the rising drug addiction problem plaguing the North-Eastern region, including his home state. According to Saha, the lack of proper sports infrastructure is a major contributor to the increasing substance abuse among youth, emphasizing that keeping young minds engaged in athletics can help them stay focused, understand themselves better, and steer clear of harmful distractions.
In a bid to foster a sports-oriented environment, Saha drew attention to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for sports complexes and stadiums, where facilities are now named after athletes rather than politicians. This shift, he believes, will inspire future generations to remember and honor sporting icons, thereby creating a healthier and more disciplined society. Saha pointed out that athletes serve as role models, and naming facilities after them can have a profound impact on young minds.
On April 3, Saha inaugurated three state-of-the-art sports facilities at the Dasarath Dev Sports Complex in Badharghat, including the Devbhakti Jamatia Synthetic Athletic Turf, the Swadeshpriya Nandi Synthetic Hockey Ground, and the Pratul Bhattacherjee Synthetic Turf Football Ground. These facilities aim to provide young athletes with the necessary resources to hone their skills and stay engaged in productive activities, thereby diverting their attention away from substance abuse.
The Tripura Chief Minister’s emphasis on sports as a means of combating drug addiction rings true, with experts suggesting that a lack of structured activities can leave young people vulnerable to substance abuse. By investing in sports infrastructure and promoting athletic pursuits, governments can help channel energy and enthusiasm into positive outlets. It remains to be seen how effective this approach will be in Tripura and the North-Eastern region, but Saha’s commitment to the cause is a positive step in the right direction.
According to Saha, these new facilities will not only provide a platform for young athletes to excel but also serve as a deterrent against drug addiction. By keeping young minds engaged and focused, Saha believes that the state can create a healthier and more disciplined society, free from the scourge of drug abuse. As the state government continues to prioritize sports development, it remains to be seen whether this approach will yield tangible results in the fight against drug addiction.
