Nagaland’s Thrust on Food Safety: Comprehensive Surveillance Drive Across Districts
In a bid to ensure the safety of its citizens, the State Food Safety Authority in Nagaland has launched a massive surveillance drive across various districts, focusing on a wide range of food items. This move is part of the National Annual Surveillance Plan (NASP), an initiative of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). As part of this drive, food safety officers from Kohima, Mokokchung, and Dimapur zones have collected numerous surveillance samples, including fresh fruits and vegetables, food grains, organic foods, confectioneries, packaged drinking water, paneer, and dairy analogues, as well as jaggery samples.
According to an official statement, a total of 97 survey samples were collected from various parts of the state and were sent for testing to the state public health laboratory in Kohima, the state food laboratory, as well as various other laboratories accredited by the National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL). This exercise aims to prevent food adulteration and address fraudulent practices related to the standards, labeling, and misrepresentation of the said products.
The authorities also highlighted the ongoing surveillance efforts targeting dairy analogues and used cooking oil. These initiatives aim to prevent the re-introduction of used cooking oil into the food supply chain, ensuring a safer and healthier environment for citizens. Furthermore, the food safety authority regularly collects survey and enforcement samples from different parts of the state every month.
This concerted effort is crucial in maintaining the nation’s food safety standards, ensuring that the people are protected from the risks associated with food contamination and adulteration. The fight against substandard and adulterated food products requires a collective effort, and the state authorities’ pro-active approach will surely prove effective in shielding the citizens from potential health hazards.
