Waqf Amendment Bill: Kiren Rijiju Denounces Opposition’s Rumors, Citing Truth and Transparency
As the Indian Parliament deliberates on the contentious Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, the opposition has been vocal about its concerns, labeling the bill “unconstitutional” and attempting to thwart its passage. The bill, introduced by Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, seeks to improve the administration of Waqf properties, introduce technology-driven management, address complexities, and ensure transparency.
The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) has been consulting stakeholders, and its report has been submitted to Parliament. The JPC’s recommendations will be crucial in shaping the bill’s future. The bulk of the opposition to the bill comes from the Congress, with party leaders Gaurav Gogoi and Mallikarjun Kharge leading the charge. Gogoi has called the bill an attempt to “bulldoze legislation” and claimed that lawmakers are being unfairly restricted from submitting amendments.
Congress MP KC Venugopal has also criticized the bill, stating that it lacks transparency and could lead to the “bulldozing” of religious institutions. The Hindu Hriday Samrat (HHF), a Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) faction, has also come out in opposition to the bill, citing concerns over the protection of Waqf properties.
The government, however, has been adamant that the bill will ensure the “mainstreaming” of minority communities and prevent “malpractices” in the management of Waqf properties. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju has maintained that the bill is necessary to address the “complexities” of Waqf property management and ensure transparency. Home Minister Amit Shah has also come out in support of the bill, stating that it will help “empower” minority communities.
The debate has become a battleground for the government and opposition, with several party leaders taking to the floor to express their views. The situation will likely be no different when the bill is taken up for discussion and passage in the Rajya Sabha.
The question now is: will the bill pass or wither away in the face of opposition? Only time will tell. One thing is certain, however: the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, has become a litmus test for the government and opposition, with far-reaching implications for minority communities and the future of our country.
