Horrific Explosion in Gujarat: 21 Lives Lost as Body Parts Scatter 300 Meters from ‘Illegal’ Firecracker Warehouse
A devastating explosion at a firecracker storage and manufacturing facility in Gujarat’s Banaskantha district on Tuesday resulted in the tragic loss of 21 lives, with two individuals sustaining injuries. The incident occurred around 9:45 AM in an industrial zone close to Deesa town, approximately 30 kilometers from the district headquarters. District collector Mihir Patel described the intensity of the blast, noting that it sent body parts flying as far as 200-300 meters from the site. The explosion caused the collapse of the godown, exacerbating the devastation.
Authorities report that the godown was allegedly engaged in illegal firecracker manufacturing, despite holding an expired license limited to storage purposes. The structure, known as Deepak Traders and owned by Deepak Mohnani and Khubchand Mohnani, had failed to renew its license after it expired on December 31, 2024. Deesa Sub Divisional Magistrate Neha Panchal confirmed that the renewal process was stalled due to inadequate facilities at the unit, and stressed strong action would follow for operating without necessary permissions.
Superintendent of Police Akshayraj Makwana stated that forensic teams are diligently working to establish the exact cause of the explosion. Preliminary investigations suggest illegal stockpiling of firecrackers, leading police to file a First Information Report (FIR) and form five investigative teams. A special investigation team (SIT), led by a Deputy Superintendent of Police, has been constituted, and several individuals have been detained for questioning.
All the victims hailed from Haliya village in Madhya Pradesh’s Harta district, with even family members residing at the premises succumbing to injuries caused by falling debris. This adds a layer of tragedy to the incident, deeply affecting their community back home. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav expressed condolences over the untimely deaths of the workers from his state, highlighting the grave loss.
In response to this tragic event, significant financial support has been announced for the victims’ families. Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his sorrow over the incident and announced an ex gratia of ₹2 lakh for the kin of each deceased person. The injured will receive ₹50,000 from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF). Meanwhile, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel offered additional condolences and declared ₹4 lakh in support to the families of the deceased and ₹50,000 for the injured.
