Major Victory for India’s Aviation Sector: RS Passes Protection of Interests in Aircraft Objects Bill 2025

The Indian Parliament has just passed the Protection of Interests in Aircraft Objects Bill, 2025, aimed at giving legal effect to the convention on International Interests in Mobile Equipment. The move is expected to further boost India’s aviation sector, which has witnessed tremendous growth in the past decade. According to the Civil Aviation Minister, India is now the third-largest domestic Civil Aviation market in the world, with the number of domestic passengers more than doubling from 60.7 million in 2014 to 161.3 million in 2024.

The Minister, Ram Mohan Naidu, highlighted the rapid growth in the sector, with the number of aircraft increasing from 359 in 2014 to 840 in 2024. He attributed this success to the Prime Minister’s vision of making air travel more accessible to the masses. “Hawai Chappal se Hawai Jahaj ka Safar” (From walking on the clouds to flying on a royal aircraft) is the mantra that has guided the government’s efforts in the aviation sector, aimed at fulfilling the dreams of the common man to fly.

Participating in the discussion, Sadanand Mhalu Shet of the BJP stressed that the bill will further strengthen investors’ confidence and enhance India’s global standing in the aviation sector. He noted that India is one of the world’s largest growing aviation markets, with an estimated market size of 13.88 billion dollars in 2024, expected to reach 26.8 billion dollars by 2030.

Meanwhile, Sandosh Kumar of the CPI emphasized the need to protect the interests of passengers and stakeholders related to the aviation industry, as well as the need to enhance the budgetary provision for the Civil Aviation Ministry. Other members of Parliament, including Sanjay Kumar Jha of JD (U), Haris Beeran of IUML, A A Rahim of CPI (M), and Ravi Chandra Vaddiraju of BRS, also took part in the discussion, sharing their concerns and insights on the bill.

The bill’s passage is expected to have a significant impact on the aviation sector, with the potential to attract more investment and drive growth. As India’s aviation sector continues to soar, this move is seen as a crucial step in realizing the vision of making air travel more accessible and affordable for the masses.
