OpenAI has successfully completed a pivotal $40 billion fundraising round, significantly elevating its valuation to $300 billion. Both Microsoft and Thrive Capital have shown a continued commitment to OpenAI through previous investment rounds.
Founded as a nonprofit in 2015 by Sam Altman, Elon Musk, and others, OpenAI transitioned in 2018 into a for-profit model to attract necessary funding for its ambitious AI projects. Nevertheless, the nonprofit entity has continued to wield control over company decisions. Recently, there has been a push from Mr. Altman to restructure OpenAI into a public benefit corporation, prioritizing both profit and societal good. Should this transformation not occur by the end of the year, SoftBank may reduce its contribution to $20 billion.
This restructuring effort encounters complications from Elon Musk, who has longstanding disputes with Altman and has mounted a significant bid exceeding $97 billion for the nonprofit’s assets controlling OpenAI. The board, however, has rejected this proposition.
