Massive South Korean Wildfires Fully Contained, Authorities Declare

Seoul, South Korea – After ravaging the provinces of North and South Gyeongsang for over a week, the massive wildfires that have left a trail of destruction are now fully contained, Acting Interior Minister Ko Ki-dong announced on Sunday. The devastating blazes, which have caused the greatest loss of lives and property in Korea’s history, have been brought under control, allowing authorities to shift their focus to supporting displaced residents and facilitating their swift return to daily life.

The wildfires, which began on March 21 and 22, respectively, for South and North Gyeongsang provinces, have resulted in a staggering 75 casualties, including 30 deaths, and scorched an estimated 48,000 hectares of land. Over 3,000 homes, 30 cultural heritage sites, and around 2,000 agricultural facilities have been destroyed, making this the country’s worst-ever wildfire disaster. To address the needs of those affected, the government plans to set up temporary shelters and provide emergency relief funds, psychological, and medical support.

In a significant development, South Korea’s Police authorities have arrested a 56-year-old man suspected of starting the massive wildfires. The man, who was performing an ancestral rite at a family grave on a hill in Uiseong County, North Gyeongsang Province, is believed to have caused the fire on March 22. The arrest comes as a relief to authorities and residents, who have been grappling with the aftermath of the devastating event.

As the country begins the process of recovery, authorities are working closely with emergency services, rescue teams, and support organizations to provide aid to those affected. The government has also committed to ongoing investigations into the cause of the wildfires and the role of the arrested individual.
