The Aam Aadmi Party’s Rajya Sabha MP, Sanjay Singh, has lashed out at the move, terming it “double standards of the double-engine government.”

According to Singh, while the Centre is promoting communal harmony through initiatives like “Saugat-e-Modi,” the state government is restricting the practice of namaz. He questioned the rationale behind restricting one religious practice while allowing others to thrive. “If your intentions are correct, why don’t you impose a similar ban on the sale of liquor for nine days across Uttar Pradesh?” Singh demanded.

Singh’s comments came as reports emerged of offering “one plus one” on the sale of liquor in the state, a move he deemed part of a “big scam.” “This is the double daru offer of the double-engine government, which has failed to provide employment to the youth. Long queues are seen at liquor shops in Muzaffarnagar, Noida, and Hapur,” he alleged.

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav also attacked the government’s move, suggesting it was an attempt to divert attention from fundamental issues like employment and inflation. “Festivals are celebrated with unity in our country, yet the chief minister has not understood the idea of religion in our country, which teaches universal acceptance and tolerance,” he said.

The opposition parties’ criticism of the government’s decision underscores the concern that the move is being used to impose social and religious restrictions on the public.
