Pune Police Nab Driver Who Allegedly Demanded Rs 10 Lakh in Extortion

The Pune police have made a significant arrest, taking into custody the driver of a businessman who allegedly attempted to extort a substantial amount from his employer. According to the police, the accused, Amit Dattatraya Thopte, a resident of Balaji Nagar in Dhankawadi, was working as a driver for a construction businessman. Thopte’s alleged criminal activities began when he forwarded obscene messages from his employer’s father’s phone on his WhatsApp, taking screenshots of the explicit content, and then forwarding them to the businessman.

The accused allegedly demanded Rs 10 lakh from the businessman, threatening to defame him if the demand was not met. He also threatened to harm the businessman’s family members if his demands were not fulfilled. The businessman lodged a compliant at the Bibwewadi police station on March 28, and the police promptly verified the authenticity of the allegations.

In a daring move, Thopte sent extortion messages to the businessman, insisting that he bring the demanded amount to a building in Pushpa Mangal Chowk. However, the police were ready and laid a trap, instructing the businessman to hand over dummy currency notes to Thopte. The police then nabbed Thopte red-handed while he was accepting the dummy currency of Rs 2 lakh and the original amount of Rs 9,500 from the businessman.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajmukar Shinde has confirmed that an FIR was lodged against Thopte under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Section 308 (5). The accused has been remanded to police custody until March 31 for further investigation. Senior police inspector Shankar Salunkhe has released a statement indicating that the probe has revealed that Thopte is debt-ridden and unable to repay the loans taken from various individuals at Marketyard, prompting him to resort to extortion.
