Northeastern States’ National Highway Projects: A Huge Investment for Economic Growth
The northeastern states of India, comprising Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, and Tripura, are receiving a massive investment of Rs 87,363 crore to upgrade their national highways. This significant sum will go towards completing ongoing projects and commencing new ones, aimed at boosting the region’s economic growth and connectivity. According to recent data, Assam holds the highest number of National Highway projects, with the longest road length currently under construction, worth Rs 39,239 crore.
The ongoing projects in Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, and Tripura will transform the region’s infrastructure, improving connectivity and enhancing economic opportunities. The projects, either completed or awaiting commencement, will require careful management, considering factors such as availability of encumbrance-free land, forest clearance, environment clearance, utility shifting, and working season, among others.
Assam takes the lead with the highest funds allocated for development and maintenance work, amounting to Rs 5,329 crore. Arunachal Pradesh follows with Rs 3,488 crore, while Nagaland receives Rs 1,227 crore, Manipur gets Rs 1,508 crore, and Tripura is allocated Rs 514 crore. The total investment in the region’s National Highway projects stands at Rs 43,322 crore, with the combined total under construction projects amounting to Rs 87,363 crore.
While the journey to completing these projects is expected to take until 2028, measures are being taken to streamline land acquisition, expedite approvals, and ensure close coordination with all stakeholders, including state governments. Regular reviews at various levels will also be crucial in preventing delays and ensuring the projects are completed on schedule.
