Shillong, Meghalaya – The curtain has fallen on the 7th Act East Business Show, a three-day extravaganza that has solidified the state’s position as a coveted investment destination. The event drew delegates from 14 countries, all eager to tap into Meghalaya’s burgeoning industries, including hospitality, healthcare, and Information Technology (IT). The state’s Chief Minister met with the German delegation, expressing optimism about future collaborations and investments.
The business show, which concluded on Thursday, featured discussions on tourism, travel, and hospitality. The German Ambassador to India, Dr. Philipp Ackermann, had earlier visited the iconic living root bridges, marveling at the region’s natural beauty. The participating countries included Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Armenia, UAE, Indonesia, Malaysia, USA, Australia, the Philippines, Japan, and Thailand.
Tourism is now the third-largest driver of Meghalaya’s economy, with the state aiming to become a USD 10 billion economy. Shillong’s success and Meghalaya’s growth will benefit not just the state but the entire country. “Tourism is now the third-largest driver of Meghalaya’s economy, contributing to its projected growth toward a USD 10 billion economy,” said Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh, who also highlighted the state’s emergence as a center for medical tourism, attracting patients and attendants from Bangladesh, Arunachal Pradesh, and other parts of India.
The minister emphasized the importance of balancing high-value and low-value tourism to ensure Meghalaya expands its market reach while maintaining sustainable growth. “The state has undergone significant transformations, and we want these changes to help Meghalaya and Shillong reach their full potential,” Lyngdoh added. He also invited visitors to explore Meghalaya’s villages, where traditional practices in textiles, animal husbandry, and cultural preservation remain deeply rooted.
As the state looks to the future, Meghalaya’s Director of Tourism, Cyril VD Diengdoh, outlined upcoming tourism projects, highlighting why the state is a promising investment destination. With its rich cultural heritage and unique opportunities for expansion, Meghalaya is poised to become a major player in the region’s economic landscape. As the curtains draw closed on the 7th Act East Business Show, the spotlight is now on Meghalaya, a state that is open for business, tourism, and growth.
