Assam Journalist Held Again: Shadow of Intimidation Hitching a Free Press in India
A senior journalist, Dilwar Hussain Mazumder, has been re-arrested by the Assam Police, a mere day after being granted bail by the Kamrup (Metro) Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Court in Guwahati. The journalist, who works with the news organization The Cross Current, was taken into custody while still lodged in jail, sources revealed.
The arrest comes after a second case was registered at the Panbazar Police Station, based on a complaint filed by D Saikia, the Managing Director of the Assam Co-operative Apex Bank Ltd. The new case is filed under sections 329, 324(4), 351(2), 309(4), and 115 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). According to the First Information Report (FIR), Saikia alleged that on March 25, 2025, Mazumder entered the first floor of the bank’s head office in Panbazar, attempting to steal valuable bank documents.
The original case against Mazumder was filed by Sishupal Boro, a permanent security guard at the bank, although the details are unclear. The journalist was initially arrested and charged with sections 351(2) of the BNS and Section 3(1)(r) of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, 1989 (Amendment 2015).
Mazumder’s arrest follows an interview the journalist conducted with Saikia during a protest organized by the Jatiya Yuva Shakti group. The journalist’s reporting allegedly caused concern among top officials at the bank, triggering a second case. Despite the police’s plea for a five-day remand in custody, the court deemed the prosecution’s arguments inadequate, ultimately granting Mazumder bail.
Assam Police’s swift re-arrest of Mazumder raises questions about the free press in the state and the treatment of journalists who dare to investigate corruption. The development will likely invite widespread criticism and spark concerns about the government’s commitment to upholding press freedom and protecting media professionals.
As news of the re-arrest spreads, observers will be watching to see how the situation unfolds and whether the authorities can provide a clear explanation for the sudden U-turn. In the meantime, the journalist community, media organizations, and concerned citizens will be closely monitoring the developments and demanding transparency and accountability from the Assam Police and the government.
