Delhi’s Power Struggle Escalates: India Bloc Condemns Politicization of Lok Sabha Speaker’s Jibe at Rahul Gandhi
A Day After Face-Off, Opposition Delegation Meets Speaker Om Birla to Address Concerns
A day after a heated face-off in the Lok Sabha, a delegation of opposition parties met Speaker Om Birla on Thursday to discuss several issues, including the “politicisation of the statement made by Birla outside the House.” The meeting was the result of a letter submitted to Birla, which contained eight broad points, including the non-appointment of a Deputy Speaker, denial of speaking opportunities to the Leader of the Opposition, and disregard for Business Advisory Committee (BAC) decisions.
The delegation, led by Gaurav Gogoi, the Congress’s Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha, included representatives from various opposition parties, including the DMK, Samajwadi Party, TMC, Shiv Sena (UBT), NCP, RJD, IUML, MDMK, and RSP. They expressed concerns over the manner in which the government is operating in the House, which they claim contravenes parliamentary rules, conventions, and the culture of the House.
Gogoi pointed out that Birla’s statement on Wednesday, in which he urged members to conduct themselves in a manner that maintains the high standards and dignity of Parliament, was not clear and was being politicized outside the House. He also questioned why the Speaker did not clarify which specific incident or subject he was referring to. The opposition parties are unhappy with the way the government is handling the proceedings in the House, including the denial of speaking opportunities to the Leader of the Opposition, the non-appointment of a Deputy Speaker, and the disregard for the decisions of the Business Advisory Committee.
The opposition parties have also expressed their concerns over the government’s handling of adjournment motions, private members’ bills, and the exclusion of key ministries from Budget and Demand for Grants discussions. They are also unhappy with the way the microphones of opposition members are being switched off during debates, rendering them ineffective. The opposition parties are demanding that the Speaker take these issues seriously and address their concerns to restore the dignity of the House.
The opposition’s concerns are likely to escalate the situation in the House, which has already seen several heated exchanges between members. The meeting with the Speaker is a crucial step towards addressing these issues, and the opposition parties hope that it will lead to a more constructive and respectful environment in the House.
