Introducing the Majestic Himalayan Serow: A Rare Gem Arrives at Itanagar Zoo
Itanagar Zoo Welcomes Himalayan Serow from Papum Pare District
The Itanagar Zoo in Arunachal Pradesh has received a new resident, an adult female Himalayan serow, brought in from Kimin in Papum Pare district. Dr. Sorang Tadap, a veterinarian at the Biological Park Itanagar, led a team to transport the serow along with three staff members on Tuesday.
The serow was originally rescued from a forest near Kimin town by local resident Ngurang Yapa in 2024. Ngurang’s family cared for the animal for a year and a half, but as it grew, they found it increasingly difficult to manage, prompting them to reach out to forest department officials to relocate it to the Itanagar Zoo. Dr. Tadap had been monitoring the animal’s health and transfer for several months, working closely with the family and forest department officials.
According to Dr. Tadap, the serow is healthy but will need to be kept under quarantine as per the Central Zoo Authority (CZA) protocol to ensure its well-being and prevent any potential health risks to other zoo inhabitants. As listed under Schedule I of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, and classified as “Vulnerable” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species, the Himalayan serow is dependent on humans and cannot be released back into the wild.
Dr. Tadap expressed his gratitude to the authorities, including the Chief Wildlife Warden, government of Arunachal Pradesh, for their support in facilitating the rescue. With the Itanagar Zoo authority and DFO Banderdewa also providing backing, the successful relocation was a collaborative effort. The serow will now call the Itanagar Zoo its permanent home, where it will be cared for and protected for the rest of its life.
This development in wildlife conservation highlights the importance of community involvement and cooperation in protecting endangered species. As the Himalayan serow is a rare and vulnerable subspecies, its relocation to the Itanagar Zoo underscores the need for responsible and regulated wildlife management practices. With the Itanagar Zoo’s expertise and resources, the serow is set to thrive, providing a valuable educational opportunity for visitors and a prime example of successful conservation efforts.
