Tripura CPM Leaders Boycott Budget Session: A Strong Protest or a Farcical Move?

Agartala: CPM Walks Out of Tripura Assembly, Accusing Speaker of Undemocratic Behavior

The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPM) has announced that it will boycott the remaining days of the ongoing budget session of the Tripura Assembly, citing undemocratic behavior on the part of the Speaker, Biswa Bandhu Sen. This decision was taken after a privilege motion raised by the party’s leader, Jitendra Chaudhury, against Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ratan Lal Nath was rejected by the Speaker. The CPM legislators staged a walkout from the House in protest.

According to sources, the Speaker had received two motions of privilege – one from Chaudhury and another from Nath – and asked the minister to move his motion. However, the CPM alleged that Sen’s decision was biased and against the principles of democratic functioning. The party claimed that the Speaker had chosen to ignore the privilege motion raised by Chaudhury and instead allowed Nath to move his motion, giving him a “free rein to mislead the House”.

The trouble began during the budget discussion on Monday when Nath allegedly made a comment that was deemed offensive by Chaudhury, who then moved a privilege motion against him. However, the Speaker rejected the motion, leading to a heated exchange between the two leaders. The CPM has now demanded an apology from Nath and has slammed the Speaker for his “partisan” role in the House.

The CPM also accused the Minister of attempting to create a racial divide by making such comments, which they claimed were aimed at creating an ethnic disturbance. They also took umbrage with the Speaker for not allowing a fair discussion in the House and for allowing Nath’s motion to proceed without giving Chaudhury a chance to speak. The CPM has alleged that the Speaker’s actions have brought disrepute to the Assembly and the state’s legislative system as a whole.

The continuing sit-in protest outside the Assembly complex by the CPM, where party members are gathering to stage a sleep-in, has been temporarily shifted to a nearby park due to the rain. The CPM’s boycott move is likely to create an unstable atmosphere in the House, with the elections just around the corner, and could impact the functioning of the government in the coming days.

The development is significant, coming at a time when the CPM is already under pressure to assert its political strength in the state. The party’s decision to boycott the remaining sessions of the budget session could have long-term implications for the state’s political landscape. The CPM’s action also opens up the possibility of a confrontation with the government, which could potentially lead to further instability and is a major test for the former’s leadership.
