Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport Witnesses Unstoppable Surge in Southeast Asian Travel Boom
Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) has witnessed a significant surge in passenger traffic to Southeast Asia, thanks to relaxed visa policies and changing travel preferences. According to the latest figures, the airport processed a staggering 2.51 million passengers to destinations in the region, marking a 19 percent increase from 2023.
This unprecedented growth is attributed to the easing of visa requirements by several Southeast Asian countries, including Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam. These relaxed policies have made it easier for Indian tourists and business travelers to venture out to these popular destinations. As a result, airlines have increased flight frequencies to cater to the growing demand, with CSMIA now offering 133 weekly flights connecting Mumbai to five countries in the region: Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, and Vietnam.
The impact is evident in the airport’s busiest routes, with Singapore, Bangkok, and Kuala Lumpur emerging as the top three most popular destinations among travelers from Mumbai. This surge in traffic has also led to a significant jump in air traffic movements, with CSMIA handling over 14,000 movements in 2024, a 27 percent increase from the previous year. In December 2024 alone, a record 1,295 flights operated on these routes, marking a 10 percent rise from the same period in 2023.
Airliners such as Singapore Airlines, Air India, IndiGo, Thai Airways, and Malaysia Airlines have increased flight frequencies to capitalize on the growing demand. As the airport continues to set new benchmarks for international travel, its spokesperson attributes the success to “simplified visa processes expected to drive further demand” and the airport’s commitment to “seamless travel, enhancing passenger services.” With more people opting for work and leisure travel, CSMIA is poised to exceed expectations by offering a range of flight options, making travel between Mumbai and Southeast Asia easier and more accessible than ever.
