Meghalaya Makes Strides in Eradicating Tuberculosis
As the world marked World TB Day yesterday, Meghalaya’s health department unveiled a cutting-edge technology to detect tuberculosis (TB) in asymptomatic patients, marking a significant milestone in its 100-day TB-free India campaign. The indigenous machine can rapidly transport sputum samples from remote villages to testing labs, ensuring faster and more accurate detection.
According to Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh, who addressed the World TB Day program at U Soso Tham Auditorium in Shillong, the technology is a game-changer in the fight against TB. "We can bridge healthcare gaps by tapping into the 1,227 registered traditional healers in the state, who account for nearly 36% of all treatments in Meghalaya," she emphasized. Lyngdoh also highlighted the importance of targeted investments to reach vulnerable individuals undergoing TB treatment.
The 100-day TB Elimination Campaign is being implemented in five districts – East Khasi Hills, Ri-Bhoi, East Garo Hills, West Garo Hills, and South Garo Hills – and has already identified 823 TB cases and declared over 600 villagers TB-free. The campaign’s success story is a testament to the power of community-driven efforts in combating TB, noted guest of honor JS Monim.
In Jowai, the District Tuberculosis Control office observed World TB Day at District Library Mynthong, with a focus on "Yes, We Can End TB: Commit, Invest, Deliver." Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) DV Lyngdoh urged the community, healthcare workers, and educational institutions to collaborate in spreading awareness about TB. "Early detection and awareness are crucial in the fight against tuberculosis, which is both preventable and curable," he stressed.
Meanwhile, nodal officer Dr. L Marbaniang emphasized the importance of early diagnosis in controlling the disease. The office of the District Tuberculosis honored health workers from West and East Jaintia Hills for their dedication and contribution to TB prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and awareness creation. The rally to raise awareness about the disease was a significant highlight, with students, teachers, doctors, and healthcare workers marching together with banners and placards.
As the world looks to eradicate TB, Meghalaya’s efforts are a beacon of hope in the fight against this deadly disease. With the right tools and strategic investments, we can indeed make significant progress toward a TB-free future.
