Assam Assembly in Turmoil: BJP Slams Congress MLA for Violent Attack on Deputy Speaker Numal Momin Nurul Huda
Guwahati: Uproar in Assam Assembly as Ruling BJP Alleges Attack on Deputy Speaker, Counter-Allegations Echo Through Halls
The Assam Legislative Assembly was marred by controversy on Monday, with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) accusing Congress MLA Nurul Huda of physically attacking Deputy Speaker Numal Momin just outside the House, prompting a raucous session and eventually, an adjournment. However, Huda refuted the claims, stating that he and his colleagues were simply blocking the Deputy Speaker’s path during a protest.
The session began amidst a backdrop of tensions, with Congress MLAs, clad in black, protesting against last week’s alleged verbal abuse and physical intimidation of opposition members by BJP MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi. The Congress legislators staged a sit-in outside the Speaker and Deputy Speaker’s chambers, demanding action against Kurmi.
During the Question Hour, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma claimed to have received a WhatsApp message from Momin, stating he was attacked by Huda and was now hospitalized. Sarma urged the Speaker to register a police complaint and hand the matter over to the police for investigation. Momin was, however, seen sitting in the House and attending the session earlier, only to leave later.
Speaker Biswajit Daimary assured to investigate the matter, while Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia suggested setting up a House Committee to probe the incident, which he claimed took place within the assembly complex. The opposition parties, led by the Congress, AIUDF, and CPI(M), trooped into the Well of the House, displaying placards and protesting the alleged attack on Momin.
The BJP, led by Sarma, countered that Momin, an indigenous tribal, was attacked by the opposition, warning that such incidents would set a bad precedent. The Chief Minister urged the opposition to desist from instigating violence, citing that Momin had been a serving MLA for nine years and Deputy Speaker for four. Momin, who arrived at the House with a bandaged left wrist, narrated the incident, stating that Huda and his colleagues were protesting in the corridor, and he inadvertently got hurt during the commotion.
Huda, when questioned, denied physically attacking Momin and maintained that he and his companions were merely blocking the Deputy Speaker’s path. Congress MLA Huda claimed that he and his colleagues wanted to ask about their privilege notice, which was not being addressed.
The situation remained volatile, with both sides refusing to back down. The Speaker, Daimary, asked officials to review security measures within the complex, and the Assembly was adjourned for 10 minutes before resuming. As the debate raged on, Momin entered the House with his bruised wrist, prompting Sarma to reiterate the need for a House Committee to investigate the matter.
Although the controversy is far from resolved, one thing is clear: the Assam Legislative Assembly has witnessed a tumultuous day, with accusations, counter-accusations, and unwarranted protests characterizing the proceedings. As the dust settles, the question remains – can the Assembly restore peace and order, or will these bitter divisions continue to tear it asunder?
