Congress Demands Privilege Committee Hearing for Assam MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi amid Scandal
Assam Assembly Serves Notice to BJP MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi over Alleged Assault on Oppn MPs and Abusive Language
The Congress party has demanded that the Assam Assembly Speaker, Biswajit Daimary, initiate breach of privilege proceedings against BJP MLA Rupjyoti Kurmi, who allegedly attempted to physically attack opposition members and used abusive language during a heated debate in the House on Friday.
According to sources, the confrontation escalated as Kurmi, a former Congress MLA who joined the BJP in 2021, hurled expletives at the opposition members, which were later expunged from the official records. The BJP’s Assam unit president, Dilip Saikia, has instructed Kurmi to issue a public apology for his conduct.
The incident occurred during a heated debate in the House, which was marked by a verbal altercation between Kurmi and opposition members. The Congress’s Leader of Opposition, Debabrata Saikia, has expressed concern over Kurmi’s conduct, stating that the MLA continued to issue threats even after the session, creating a sense of intimidation among opposition legislators.
Saikia has urged Speaker Daimary to take decisive action under Rule 158 of the Assam Assembly’s rules and procedures to ensure disciplinary measures against Kurmi. The Congress leader stated that his party had refrained from disrupting the House session, instead staging a brief walkout, in the hope that the ruling party would initiate an all-party dialogue to address the issue. However, no such initiative was taken.
Saikia has also demanded that Daimary respond to the matter before the next assembly session, scheduled for Monday morning. He affirmed his confidence in the Speaker’s impartiality and called for a prompt decision before the House reconvenes at 9:30 am.
Saikia’s letter, addressed to Speaker Daimary, urged him to take immediate action against Kurmi, stating that the MLA’s conduct was “the most unparliamentary and unbecoming of a member of the House.” The Congress leader also expressed concern over the lack of action taken by the Assembly’s officials to maintain the dignity of the House.
In a statement on Sunday, the Congress party reiterated its stance, calling for an explanation regarding the incident from the Speaker and demanding that the MLA be suspended from Assembly proceedings until the breach of privilege proceedings are completed. The party also urged the Speaker to ensure that the rules and procedures are followed strictly.
The opposition parties in the Assam Assembly have long been at loggerheads with the ruling BJP over various issues, including the alleged Poetags and roles assigned to them in the recently passed Assam Budget. The ongoing political standoff has raised concerns about the state’s legislative body’s ability to function smoothly.
