Urgent: Kennedy Demands Anti-Vaccine Group Erase Deceptive C.D.C. Page Now!

On Saturday, Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. directed leaders of the nonprofit he founded, Children’s Health Defense, to remove a contentious web page that closely mimicked the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) website. The page had controversially presented arguments suggesting vaccines cause autism. This action by Secretary Kennedy came in response to an inquiry from The New York Times and considerable attention on social media. By Saturday evening, the page had been taken offline, showcasing Secretary Kennedy’s swift response to the situation.

The Department of Health and Human Services issued a statement, emphasizing their commitment to “upholding gold-standard, evidence-based science” and confirming Secretary Kennedy’s direct involvement in requesting the site’s removal. The nonprofit, known for its anti-vaccine stance, had not provided any comment on the incident. It remains unclear why they decided to publish a page mirroring the CDC’s layout, a potentially misleading action that may violate federal copyright law.

While Secretary Kennedy has held views linking vaccines to autism, a stance he maintained during his Senate confirmation hearings despite comprehensive evidence debunking the theory, he has stated that he severed ties with Children’s Health Defense upon launching his presidential campaign in 2023. In a move that raised eyebrows, the CDC recently announced plans to re-examine the evidence concerning vaccines and autism, a decision criticized by Senator Bill Cassidy, who labeled it a misuse of resources.

The fake page’s appearance mirrored the trusted CDC website, even using similar typefaces and logos. However, unlike the CDC’s official stand, which clearly negates any vaccine-autism connection, the imitation page suggested otherwise. Cited studies included work by Brian S. Hooker, the nonprofit’s chief scientific officer, blending peer-reviewed information with questionable claims, as noted by Dr. Bruce Gellin, a former director of the Department of Health and Human Services’ vaccine program.

Spotlighting parental testimonials, the page featured videos with titles like “Mother of 3: I Will Never Vaccinate Again,” which starkly contrasted the CDC’s efforts to dispel such myths. This misinformation emerged as Children’s Health Defense, through its CHD.TV channel, highlighted a recent measles outbreak in West Texas. The channel aired an interview with skeptical parents of a 6-year-old girl reportedly dying from measles, marking the first U.S. measles death in a decade. Despite health authorities confirming the child’s lack of vaccination, the organization claimed hospital records disputed the stated cause of death.

Additionally, Children’s Health Defense featured Dr. Ben Edwards, an alternative medicine doctor who treated the siblings of the deceased child, deepening the controversy. Meanwhile, Covenant Children’s Hospital in Lubbock, Texas, has countered the narrative, releasing a statement denouncing the misleading claims in the video and defending their confidentiality practices. Given these developments, the scrutiny on Children’s Health Defense underscores ongoing tensions in public health communication during a period of heightened misinformation around vaccines.
