Torrential Floods on National Highway 313 Pose Grave Risks for Commuters in Arunachal Pradesh

A worrying trend has emerged on National Highway 313, connecting Anini in the Dibang Valley to Roing in Lower Dibang Valley, with multiple landslides battering the route over the past fortnight. The flooded highway, a crucial artery for daily commuters and tourists, has left travelers stranded for hours at block points. While the Madhucon company under the NHDCL has been working tirelessly to clear the blockages, it takes a grueling six to eight hours for the roads to be restored.

According to reports, the landslides have been concentrated around Angolin, Kano, Punli-Etalin, and Akobe, a 40-kilometer stretch from Anini. While no human casualties have been reported, commuters are feeling the pinch as the road remain blocked for hours on end, making travel an arduous task. “Rash cutting of the highway roads has contributed to these landslides, and it’s making our journey a nightmare,” said a frustrated local resident.

As the region is yet to enter the monsoon season, the sudden landslides have raised concerns among residents. “We are worried about the safety of our lives, and the authorities should take immediate action to address the issue,” added another commuter. The NHDCL has alerted travelers to exercise extreme caution, warning that stones continue to shoot from the mountain tops, making travel on this route perilous.

The frequency and intensity of the landslides have left many to wonder if the authorities are equipped to handle the situation. “We are doing our best to clear the blockages as quickly as possible, but the situation is challenging,” said an NHDCL official. As the situation remains fluid, commuters are advised to exercise extreme caution and alternatives routes consider. With the issue unlikely to be resolved in the short term, it remains to be seen how the authorities will mitigate this crisis, ensuring the safety of all those affected.
