Breaking: Bodos’ Khehoi Camp Abuzz as Suspense Surrounds Military Coup Rumors
Conflict Rocks Nagaland: GPRN/NSCN Leadership in Crisis
A dramatic turn of events unfolded in the Khehoyi Camp, the headquarters of the GPRN/NSCN, on March 22, as a reported military coup threatened the very leadership of the organization. According to sources, the timing of the coup – around 10:00 to 11:00 am – caught many off guard, including the key figures involved. Ato Kilonser Alezo Venuh and General Samson Aye were not present in the headquarters at the time of the takeover, leaving only President MB Neokpao Konyak in camp.
The sudden power grab has sent shockwaves throughout the organization, with two feuding camps – one led by N Kitovi Zhimomi and the other by Neokpao and Venuh – remaining silent on the development, even as the evening fell. The motive behind the coup is said to be rooted in the disgruntlement among military ranks due to constant power struggles within the organization, with some even suggesting that Kitovi engineered the coup to retake control of the Khehoyi Camp, which he lost in April 2024.
Just last year, Kitovi was impeached and removed from the position of Ato Kilonser due to allegations of financial misappropriation, dictatorial functioning, incompetence, and disinterest in the GPRN/NSCN. However, he dismissed the decision as "unconstitutional" and subsequently organized a "National Assembly" at his residence, where he was re-appointed Ato Kilonser and appointed a new president and army chief. The latest development has left many wondering if Kitovi will once again attempt to reclaim power.
In the face of uncertainty, frontal organizations of the Western Sumi have taken swift action to prevent violence, with a joint team of representatives meeting with high-ranking GPRN/NSCN military leaders at the Khehoyi Camp in the evening. The Ato Area GBs Association has also issued a public notice, cautioning against resorting to violence and warning that any party resorting to violence will be barred from the Ato area. Meanwhile, Nagaland DGP Rupin Sharma was reported to have visited the Khehoyi Camp area, though it remains unclear if he was able to make contact with those inside.
As the situation unfolds, one can only speculate on the potential consequences of this high-stakes power struggle in the midst of a delicate climate. The stakes are high, and only time will tell if the GPRN/NSCN can navigate these treacherous waters and emerge stronger and more united.
