Assam School Education Board Suspends 15 Private Schools for Question Paper Leak and Examination Protocol Breaches

The Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB) has taken swift action against 15 private schools across 10 districts, suspending their affiliation for violating examination protocols and mishandling the seal of Class 11 Mathematics question papers, leading to a leak. The scandal has raised concerns over the integrity of the education system in the state.

According to an official notification, the board has lodged FIRs against all 18 institutions, including the 15 private schools, for their involvement in the malpractice. The affected private schools have been barred from admitting new students for the 2025-26 academic session, until further notice. However, students currently appearing for their Class 11 exams will be allowed to continue their studies.

The suspended schools include Azad Anchalik Jatiya Vidyalay, Palhazi in Barpeta, and Bajali Academy Of Excellence Sr. Sec. School, Pathsala, among others. The ASSEB has instructed inspectors to file police complaints against the erring institutions and has directed them to not allow new student admissions pending the outcome of the investigation.

The state government has also decided to take action against three provincialized schools for similar violations, including Lakhiganj HS School in Dhubri, Arya Vidyapith HS School in Kamrup Metro, and Rangia Girls’ HS School in Kamrup. The board’s decision to take stern action comes in the wake of a possible question paper leak, which led to the postponement of the Class 11 Mathematics exam.

The ASSEB is set to announce further decisions on the rescheduled examination dates and additional measures at its meeting on March 24. The board has emphasized that it will not compromise on maintaining the integrity of the examination process and ensuring a fair and transparent educational environment for students.

The incident has raised concerns over the vulnerability of the education system in the state, which is already grappling with issues of corruption and maladministration. The ASSEB has been criticized for its handling of the crisis, with many calling for stronger measures to prevent such incidents in the future.

As the investigation continues, the suspended schools will remain under the radar, and the students, staff, and faculty will be left to cope with the consequences of the mistake. The ASSEB must ensure that it takes concrete steps to prevent similar incidents in the future, ensuring that the education system in Assam is not only for the rich but also accessible and inclusive for all.
