MEGHALAYA, NATIONAL, NEWS ALERT, REGIONAL
On World Water Day, a national conference on “Water for Climate Resilience – North East India” was held at the University of Science and Technology Meghalaya (USTM). The event, organized by the New Delhi-based Nature Care Initiative (NCI) in collaboration with USTM’s Department of Zoology and Department of Earth Science, was supported by Himalayan News Chronicles, a national magazine covering the Himalayan region.
The conference was attended by distinguished personalities, including experts in water technology, education, and environmental conservation. The keynote speaker, Prof. Baldev Raj Gupta, emphasized the historical and mythological significance of water, highlighting its central role in civilization. James Kharkongor, Deputy Project Director of the MegArise Project in Meghalaya, commended NGOs like NCI for recognizing grassroots environmental heroes, stating that their efforts are crucial in fostering government-supported conservation initiatives.
Water technology expert Durga Prasad Mishra stressed the importance of preserving natural water bodies, noting that preservation should take precedence over afforestation. Prof. G.D. Sharma, Vice Chancellor of USTM, noted that such conferences serve as a catalyst for student engagement in water conservation efforts.
The event also featured the felicitation of three recipients of the National Water Award 2024 from Meghalaya, who were recognized for their outstanding contributions to water conservation. The awardees were Jibansius Ramshon, Lamluti Langstang, and Smt. Pretish S. Sangma, who have been instrumental in promoting environmental sustainability in the region.
The technical session saw experts from various fields present on topics such as the Hanging Bridge of Meghalaya, the Brahmaputra River, Asia’s cleanest village Mawlynnong, and the Umngot River (Dawki River). The event also provided a platform for students to engage in discussions on key environmental issues and concerns.
As a prominent socio-environmental action group with a pan-India presence, Nature Care Initiative remains committed to addressing environmental challenges. With a focus on fostering a healthier ecological balance and sustainable development, the group has been working across multiple domains since its inception in 2014.
As the world grapples with the challenges of climate change, events like this conference serve as a timely reminder of the importance of sustainable water management and conservation. With the involvement of key stakeholders, organizations, and individuals, it is crucial to address the pressing issues facing our planet and protect our precious natural resources for future generations.
