Shocking Erosion of Democracy: Erdogan’s Critics Outraged by Istanbul Mayor’s Detention in Turkey

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is grappling with unprecedented political challenges as he enters his third decade at Turkey’s helm. With inflation persisting and his party’s popularity waning, Erdogan faces a formidable opponent in Ekrem Imamoglu, the Istanbul mayor poised to contest the presidency. Imamoglu, a rising star among opposition ranks, was abruptly arrested on charges of corruption and terrorism, just days before being designated as the opposition’s presidential candidate.

Critics are denouncing Imamoglu’s arrest as a strategic move to derail his campaign. Observers emphasize the implications of this development for Turkey’s democracy, given its role as a major global economy and U.S. ally within NATO. Arife Kose, a Turkish politics scholar at the University of East Anglia, stated that while Turkey has never been a perfect democracy, barring presidential contenders marks a troubling shift towards authoritarianism.

Erdogan has held a dominant position in Turkish politics since 2003, transitioning from prime minister to president in 2014. His tenure has seen considerable economic growth and consistent electoral victories for his Justice and Development Party. However, critics argue that Erdogan has increasingly undermined democratic norms by consolidating power, curtailing media freedoms, and manipulating the judiciary against opponents. Despite these criticisms, Turkey has retained some democratic features, with opposition parties continuing to contest and occasionally win elections.

The arrest of Imamoglu potentially signals a pivotal moment for Turkey, suggesting a drift towards autocracy akin to Russia or Belarus, where elections are largely ceremonial. Hasan Sinar, a criminal law professor at Istanbul’s Altinbas University, noted that such actions align with a broader strategy of controlling political opposition, stating that these are “so-called elections because the president himself is designing the opposition.”

Erdogan defended the legal proceedings against Imamoglu and dismissed calls for public demonstrations following the arrest, warning against disruptions to public order. Nonetheless, the arrest has sparked significant public outcry, leading to large protests in Istanbul, Ankara, and Izmir, despite government restrictions. The demonstrations are reminiscent of the 2013 protests against a redevelopment project in Istanbul, which prompted widespread unrest and subsequent government crackdowns.

While Turkey navigates these domestic tensions, it is also positioned strategically in international affairs. A group allied with Turkey has recently gained influence in Syria, and the European Union is negotiating closer defense ties with Ankara amid concerns about continued U.S. support for Ukraine. Despite these geopolitical advantages, foreign criticism of Erdogan’s governance persists, with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz calling Imamoglu’s arrest a troubling sign for EU-Turkey relations.

Erdogan’s current presidential term is set to end in 2028, but parliamentary decisions could allow him to seek re-election ahead of schedule, setting up a potential showdown with Imamoglu. Since assuming his mayoral role in 2019, Imamoglu has faced numerous investigations, yet his popularity remains a credible threat to Erdogan. Berk Esen, a political science professor at Sabanci University, asserted that Imamoglu represents a significant challenge to Erdogan’s power.

The allegations against Imamoglu include leading a criminal organization and collaborating with terrorist groups, charges he and his supporters vehemently deny. As the opposition continues to rally behind Imamoglu, questions persist regarding Turkey’s commitment to democratic processes and principles. Amidst escalating tensions, the international community closely monitors whether Turkey will maintain its delicate balance between democratic and authoritarian governance.
