Heartfelt Tribute: AITUC Leaders and Volunteers Honor Fallen Textile Mill Workers
Leaders and volunteers of the CPI-affiliated AITUC gathered on Tuesday to pay tribute to the 12 textile mill workers who were fatally shot by the French army during a 1936 protest for essential rights. The commemoration event began with a rally near the Swadeshi Mill and included floral tributes at the memorial statues. This observance not only remembered the fallen workers but also honored their struggle under Communist trade union leader V. Subbiah, which ultimately made the Union Territory the first region in Asia to adopt the eight-hour workday. This historic milestone was achieved through an agreement signed on October 31, 1936.
Former Minister R. Viswanathan, along with CPI secretary A.M. Saleem, and AITUC leaders S. Kasi Viswanathan, R. Kanniappan, S. Murthy, K. Sethuselvam, Dinesh Ponnaiah, and Nara Kalainathan led the homage ceremony. The event served as a significant reminder of the labor movement’s enduring impact on workers’ rights in Puducherry and beyond.
