MeECL’s Financial Freefall Persists, Despite Government Lifeline
Guwahati: Despite receiving support from the Meghalaya government, MeECL continues to face financial struggles. According to Power Minister AT Mondal, the corporation’s financial health remains under significant strain, despite efforts to address the issue.
The corporation has taken steps to improve its financial situation, including planning to clear its outstanding dues to NTPC by 2027-28. However, Mondal emphasized the need for more time to stabilize its finances. The minister acknowledged that MeECL is still incurring losses, but stressed the importance of offering relief to consumers.
In an effort to alleviate the financial burden on electricity consumers, the Meghalaya government recently launched the One Time Settlement (OTS) Scheme 2025. The initiative allows domestic consumers with less than 5 kW power consumption to settle their outstanding bills with certain benefits. The scheme aims to collect approximately Rs 119 crore in pending dues from these consumers, with Rs 25 crore set aside as a rebate.
The scheme has seen an impressive response so far, with officials expecting the number of participants to increase in the coming days. This will help 45,000 consumers clear their overdue bills, totaling Rs 119 crore, by offering waivers on delayed payment charges. The initiative is expected to bring relief to consumers and boost the financial stability of MeECL.
Mondal expressed hope that the OTS scheme will help the corporation get back on track, saying, “We need more time to stabilize our finances, but we are committed to providing relief to our consumers.” The move is seen as a positive step towards resolving the corporation’s financial struggles, and officials are optimistic about the response it will receive.
