Unraveling the Mystery of Nagpur Violence: Sanjay Raut’s Scathing Questions on Devendra Fadnavis’ Role as Home Minister
Protests Around Aurangzeb’s Tomb Reach Boiling Point in Maharashtra, Prompts Calls for Reflection on State’s Polarization
The issue of Aurangzeb’s tomb in Maharashtra has ignited heated debates, with violence erupting in Nagpur between rival groups. As the conflict escalates, some are questioning the motivations behind it and the role of the government in fanning the flames. As journalist Sanjay Raut, editor of Saamana, points out, it’s crucial to consider the broader context in which this issue has emerged.
With Maharashtra facing numerous pressing issues, including corruption, farmer suicides, and extortion, some believe the controversy is a diversion tactic. "They want to resurrect Aurangzeb from his tomb, distract people from their daily struggles and the state’s problems," Raut said. This is particularly concerning, given the state’s own struggles to address Farmer-Loan Waiver issues and the recent suicide of nine more farmers. "The Mahayuti government is trying to stoke unrest between Hindus and Muslims," he added.
The controversy surrounding the tomb stems from the release of the film Chhava, which explores the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, who was killed by Aurangzeb. The RSS and its affiliates have been accused of fueling the unrest, with some demanding that the government remove the tomb, citing its protected status as a symbol of Maratha history. Raut argues that this move is unacceptable, as it would erase the valour and courage of the Marathas. "This is a testament to the battles of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and other Maratha leaders who fought against Aurangzeb," he said.
As the debate rages on, the Chief Minister, Devendra Fadnavis, has Been accused of watching the violence unfold in Nagpur without taking appropriate action. His responsibilities as Home Minister make him accountable for the lack of effective policing and intelligence gathering. Raut questioned, "How could he not know about the pre-planned rioting and threats made public by VHP and Bajrang Dal members?"
The Maha Vikas Aghadi party has been vocal about its opposition to the desecration of the tomb, stating it has never promoted violent conflicts and maintains a strong commitment to secularism. Raut’s party has a track record of maintaining peace in Maharashtra, and he is incredulous about the recent rise in communal tensions. "For us, the tomb is a testament to the history of the Marathas; it’s not significant other than that," he emphasized.
