Protecting Tomorrow: Child Rights Commission Submits Vital Recommendations to Empower Children with Disabilities
State Commission Calls for Urgent Action to Protect Children with Special Needs and Tackle Drug Abuse
A high-level meeting between the Arunachal Pradesh State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (APSCPCR) and the Health Minister, Biyuram Wahge, has highlighted the pressing need for better healthcare and protection for children with special needs (CwSN) in the state. The commission, led by its Chairperson, Ratan Anya, has submitted a set of recommendations to the government to address the issues faced by these children, including the lack of developmental paediatricians and child development centers in the state.
According to the commission, CwSNs are in dire need of life-supporting therapies, which are currently out of reach for many families. To address this, the commission has recommended extending health insurance coverage under the Chief Minister Arogya Arunachal Yojana (CMAAY) to CwSNs. Additionally, the commission has proposed conducting in-depth research on the status of CwSNs in the state, as well as framing guidelines for the operation and monitoring of therapy centers.
The commission has also called for the digitalization of the sale of Schedule H, H1, and X drugs in all pharmacies across the state, as well as the establishment of children-specific de-addiction centers. This move is aimed at tackling the rising issue of drug abuse among children, which the commission has identified as a major concern.
The meeting was attended by Adviser to the Health Minister, Dr. Mohesh Chai, Health & Family Welfare Commissioner Pawan Kumar Sain, Health & Family Welfare Secretary Ira Singhal, and senior officers of the Health Department. The commission’s members, Niri Chongrowju, Honluk Lukham, Miti Libang, Taba Champa Riba, and Member Secretary Khoda Rakhi, accompanied Chairperson Ratan Anya during the visit.
In an effort to create a more holistic approach to addressing these issues, the commission has emphasized the urgent need for a multidisciplinary approach involving various government departments and stakeholders. With its recommendations, the commission aims to put in place a comprehensive plan to protect the rights of CwSNs and ensure their well-being. As the state government moves to implement the commission’s suggestions, it remains to be seen whether these measures will effectively address the pressing concerns faced by children with special needs in Arunachal Pradesh.
