Confronting the Crisis: URGENT Action Needed to Address Tura’s Soaring Drug Epidemic

Tura’s Descent into Darkness: A Looming Crisis

In the once-peaceful town of Tura, West Garo Hills, a devastating drug menace has taken hold, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. The escalation of drug use has been staggering, with a staggering 50% increase in the past year, according to Social Welfare Minister Paul Lyngdoh. As the situation worsens, concerns about the effectiveness of law enforcement and the government’s response are growing.

The Union Home Minister’s declaration of a "bottom-to-top and top-to-bottom approach" in combating drug trafficking rings hollow when the numbers tell a different story. In West Garo Hills, a single drug-related case has been detected since January 2025, raising questions about the priority and effectiveness of the police. The stark reality is that small-time users are being targeted, while high-profile peddlers operate with impunity.

The town’s streets are now rife with addicts, posing a grave threat to the community. The formation of an Anti-Narcotics Task Force is a step in the right direction, but it’s essential to see tangible results. Rehabilitation centers, such as the Addiction Treatment Facility at Tura Civil Hospital, are available, but questions persist about accessibility and resources. The lack of transparency surrounding treatment facilities is disheartening, leaving those struggling with addiction in the dark.

"It’s a slap in the face to those grappling with addiction," said a community leader. "We need more than just discussions; we need action." The Asha Bhawan, a supposed rehabilitation center run by former addicts, remains a mystery to many in Tura. It’s a sad reflection of our reality that only a handful know of its existence or what it provides.

The lack of urgency from those in power is alarming. It’s unclear why our intellectuals, developmental committees, and village chiefs are not addressing this crisis. They seem content to sit back and watch as Tura is transformed into a drug hub. The need for a comprehensive and coordinated strategy is pressing, and conversations with faith leaders highlight the importance of tangible steps to combat this epidemic.

The government’s meager financial assistance for drug demand reduction is an insult when considering the millions needed to effectively tackle this problem. We demand more than just promises; we need action. The youth of Tura are at risk of falling into a cycle of addiction, and it’s the collective responsibility of our government, police, and community leaders to provide the necessary support and resources.

As the town of Tura is ravaged by the drug crisis, it’s crucial that we rise and reclaim our community from the grips of this devastating epidemic. The time for excuses is over; it’s time for action.

Joint Water and Forest Committee: A Solution to Tura’s Water Crisis

As the water crisis in Shillong and surrounding areas worsens, it’s essential to acknowledge the impact of sand mining, excavation, and de-afforestation on water pipes. While Shillong is often singled out, other areas, such as Pynursla, Sohra, Amlarem, and Sutnga, have their own stories to tell. To address this crisis, a joint working group mechanism, such as a joint water and forest committee, is necessary. This committee would study the problems holistically and develop workable plans, building upon past efforts and utilizing low-cost technology. The water crisis is spiraling out of control, and the state government must consider its Water Policy and the Khasi-Hmar Adventist Council’s policy to address this issue effectively.

As the crisis deepens, it’s imperative to prioritize a comprehensive solution, involving the state authorities, village communities, dorbar shonong, and district councils. We must learn from small-scale interventions by line departments and avoid relying on consultants who parachute in and out. The time for action is now; the future of Tura’s water supply hangs in the balance.
