TMC Leadership Slams Suvendu Critic Kabir: “Maintain Party Discipline” Ultimatum Issued
TMC Summons MLA Humayun Kabir for Remarks on Suvendu Adhikari, Warns Him to Abide by Party’s Ideology and Ethics
The disciplinary committee of the Trinamool Congress (TMC) held a meeting on Tuesday, where they reprimanded MLA Humayun Kabir for his recent remarks about Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari. The committee members, including senior minister Chandrima Bhattacharya, Firhad Hakim, and Aroop Biswas, made it clear that Kabir must adhere to the party’s ideology and ethics.
According to the committee, kabir’s comments were deemed inappropriate and went against the spirit of the Constitution. “We have told Kabir in unequivocal terms that whatever be the provocations, he must not say anything which will go against the spirit of the Constitution. We all follow and profess our religious identities, but that should not precede our identity as lawmakers who have taken an oath to protect the secular pluralistic democratic principles of the Constitution,” said committee chief, Partho Chatterjee.
Chatterjee emphasized that no one is above the party’s ethics and ideology, not just Kabir, but all party leaders and ministers. He reminded the media that TMC leader Mamata Banerjee had recently asked all ministers and MLAs not to comment on any provocative statements made by opposition leaders, instead leaving it to the top leadership to formulate a response and prevent the situation from escalating. The committee members emphasized that Kabir had agreed to not make any inappropriate comments in public in the future.
After the meeting, Kabir was heard saying that he was “happy” with the outcome and would adhere to the committee’s directives. He claimed he had been given due respect as a party functionary and that he had explained his stance to the committee members. However, he refused to apologize for his earlier comments, saying it was not suggested by the committee.
When asked about Adhikari’s scheduled visit to Murshidabad on April 12 and 13, Kabir stated that he would discuss the matter further at that time. His earlier statement had drawn flak, with Adhikari threatening to “throw out” Muslim MLAs from the Assembly if the BJP came to power. Kabir had given Adhikari a 72-hour ultimatum to retract his comments, which expired on March 15, but Adhikari failed to do so. As a result, Kabir was served a showcause notice, which he refused to retract.
The disciplinary committee’s decision to summon Kabir comes amid concerns that some TMC leaders are using religion to gain political mileage. Kabir has also accused some TMC leaders of trying to tarnish his image within the party. The development has sparked speculation about the TMC’s stance on inter-party differences and its handling of controversies.
