A shocking food poisoning incident has left two young lives lost and many more fighting for their health in a hospital in Karnataka’s Mandya district. Two officials from Meghalaya, Commissioner & Secretary of Home Cyril Diengdoh and DC Mandya Kumar, flew in to assess the situation and provide support, amidst reports of arrests made and efforts to repatriate the affected students.
The incident, which occurred after 30 students, including 26 from Meghalaya, consumed leftover food from Holi celebrations at an unauthorized hostel, has left the community reeling. The students, aged 11-18, were admitted to hospital with severe symptoms of vomiting, diarrhoea, and dehydration. Among the deceased is 13-year-old Khrehlang Khongtani, a Class VI student from Lyndem village in Pynursla Civil Subdivision.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has announced an ex-gratia payment of Rs 3 lakh for the families of the deceased and assured to cover medical expenses for all affected children. A two-member investigation team from Meghalaya has been dispatched to investigate the circumstances surrounding the tragedy and ensure a smooth return to their home state for the affected students.
