Punjab Police Evoke Triumph as 2 Waris Punjab De Members Secured from Dibrugarh Jail in Daring Cops’ Operation
Punjab Police Custody of Waris Punjab De Associates: A New Development in the Ajnala Police Station Attack Case
In a significant development in the Ajnala police station attack case, a 25-member Punjab Police team, led by Superintendent of Police Harinder Singh Gill, took custody of Gurmeet Singh Bukkanwala and Bhagwant Singh, two associates of Waris Punjab De chief Amritpal Singh, from Dibrugarh Central Jail on Monday. The two individuals had been detained since March 2023 under the National Security Act (NSA).
According to sources, the Punjab Police initially sought transit remand for seven Waris Punjab De members, but managed to secure permission for only two due to legal hurdles. The remaining five members, including Basant Singh, Kulwant Singh Dhaliwal, Gurinderpal Singh Aujla, Harjeet Singh, and Daljeet Singh Kalsi, will have their transit remand sought again on Tuesday. Once in Punjab, all seven will be formally arrested and face trial for their involvement in the Ajnala police station attack case.
The development comes after the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP)-led Punjab government decided not to re-invoke the NSA against the seven Waris Punjab De members, whose two-year detention period at Dibrugarh Central Jail is set to expire on March 19. The Waris Punjab De members, including the two individuals under police custody, were initially detained in connection with the 2023 attack, when they stormed the police station and demanded the release of one of their associates.
The seven members, including Amritpal Singh, were detained under the NSA and later transferred to Dibrugarh Central Jail. The remaining associates, including Varinder Singh Johal and Papalpreet Singh (Amritpal’s personal gunner), were brought to the jail on March 27 and April 11, 2023, respectively. Amritpal Singh, himself, was the last to be brought to the facility on April 23, 2023. The three of them will continue to remain in Dibrugarh jail until the Punjab government decides otherwise.
The Punjab Police’s move to take custody of the Waris Punjab De associates comes as a significant step forward in the investigation into the Ajnala police station attack case. As the trial unfolds, it remains to be seen how the developments will impact the future of the Waris Punjab De members, now under police custody.
