Life in Prison for Homicide: Man Sentenced for Brutal Murder of Two Innocent Sisters in Arunachal Pradesh
Judge Sentences Man to Life Imprisonment for 2008 Murder of Two Sisters in Arunachal Pradesh
In a landmark verdict, a court in Papum Pare district of Arunachal Pradesh has sentenced a man to life imprisonment for the 2008 murder of two sisters who ran a beauty parlour in Ganga Market. Sessions Judge Yupia, Hirendra Kashyap, convicted Majibur Rahman alias Atabur Rahman under sections of the Indian Penal Code and fined him Rs 20,000. This conviction marks the culmination of an 11-year manhunt that finally ended with his arrest in January this year.
Rahman, a resident of Gohaidholoni village in Sunapur circle under Bihpuria police station in Assam’s North Lakhimpur district, had murdered the two sisters on June 6, 2008. He was initially arrested by the police on September 3, 2008, but escaped from judicial custody on August 24, 2012, along with two other prisoners, and had been on the run for over a decade. During his years on the run, he changed his identity and moved across various states, including Kerala and Karnataka, and worked in different locations in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
Rahman’s criminal record includes multiple thefts in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, and he was also part of a gang involved in various thefts across the two states. It was his extensive criminal record and the dedication of the Capital Police team that led to his tracking down using electronic and human surveillance, according to Itanagar Superintendent of Police Rohit Rajbir Singh. “This conviction not only marks the culmination of a long-standing investigation but also reinforces the dedication and perseverance of the Capital Police team in ensuring justice is served,” he said.
The case highlights the importance of persistent and meticulous investigation, which led to the conviction of a notorious serial offender. The sentence is a significant victory for the victims’ family and a testament to the tireless efforts of the law enforcement agencies involved in bringing the perpetrator to justice. As the state continues to grapple with crime and lawlessness, cases like this serve as a reminder of the importance of rigorous law enforcement and the need for perpetrators of heinous crimes to face the full weight of the law.
